Discover Liverpool’s fascinating wartime history this summer at Western Approaches.
The school holidays are in full swing and Liverpool remains one of the UK’s most popular destinations for families.
When you are exploring for activities to do in the city, visiting Western Approaches should be at the top of your to do list and we want to tell you why.
You can explore the remarkable and emotive story of the Western Approaches Command, alongside learning about the city’s pivotal role that it played during the Second World War.
The museum showcases the inspiring work of Western Approaches Command which worked tirelessly against the threat from German U-boats, aircraft and surface warships as well as the harsh sea and weather conditions of the North Atlantic. Their aim was to achieve the safe and timely arrival of convoys, which proved to be a decisive moment during the War.
Located in Exchange Flags, just a short walk from Moorfields and James Street stations, Western Approaches’ restored wartime bunker enables visitors to take a step back into history to the original building where the battle was fought and won.
The Royal Navy purchased Derby House in 1939, moving operations from Plymouth in 1941. The top-secret headquarters includes a 2-storey underground bunker, with walls and ceilings made up of thick, reinforced concrete, that will capture the minds of visitors of all ages.
The headquarters covers approximately 55,000 square feet and nearly 1,000 Royal Navy and RAF personnel working tirelessly at the site. Derby House quickly became an integral centre of wartime activity during the Battle of the Atlantic.
At the heart of the headquarters is the two-storey Operations Room, dominated by a large wall map showing positions of ships, aircraft and U-boats across the vast expanse of the North Atlantic. It was here that every movement was plotted, decisions made and orders prepared to defend the convoys and attack the U-boats.
Western Approaches Command was staffed largely by the Women’s Royal Naval Service, affectionately known as Wrens and the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, or better known as Waafs.
